Hunting the “RUT”

The time of the season that most hunters just can’t wait for. When the early season is coming to a close and the Bucks begin the yearly quest to mate. These boys lose all train of thought and in some cases forget all the life long lessons that they have learned. Their main focus is simply find a Doe and breed. For hunters this is the time when that monster just may be preoccupied enough to let down his guard and walk right into your sights.

Setting yourself up for the rut can be an interesting task as the deer movement becomes so unpredictable. The obvious things such as using Doe Estrus and the proper calls can highly increase your chances of success. But lets not forget that these are some of the smartest animals in the woods and they don’t always fall for these tricks. Stand location at this point is crucial! Locations with a high rate of Doe activity is always a good place to start as with the timing where there are Does there are sure to be some bucks nearby.

If ever there is a time of year that you would willingly allow a nice doe to simply walk by this is it. What could be following her is what you are truly after. There have been many times during my “rut” hunts that I would watch a nice doe walk right by me and minutes later sure enough here he comes! nose to the ground trying nothing more than to stay on her trail. This is the time! the time where he is not thinking about you or where you may be.

If nothing else can be said about this time of year, you can always think of this: Take advantage of this opportunity!

  1. I guess i am wierd but my main passion is hunting predaters. Mainly coyotes. This year at the very begining of the rut. Just at first light. I was heading towards one of my dog hunting spots. On my atv. Riding along the edge of a bean field. I look over and not more than 20 yards away. Stands a doe and 2 fairly nice bucks. All 3 of them staring right at me. As i come rolling past them. Next thing i know. One of the bucks standing beside the doe. Hits the dirt like he was just shot in the head. He just disapeared . All i could see was part of his rack sticking up above the beans. He was laying in. I think he thought. Now i cant see you. So you cant see me. lol! But i always heard about smart bucks will lay doun and hide. Well i saw it for myself. But he forgot to go some where i couldnt see him before he lay doun. But yea that was wild how he just droped so fast to the ground! Lucky for him i was looking for his enemy. The ole woods dogs and not him!
